Tips!
  • Quickly read the title, the example and the rest of the text.
  • Decide on the part of speech* and if it is positive or negative.
  • Try adding different prefixes and/or suffixes to the word in capitals, or forming compounds. You may need to make several changes and/or add more than one affix.
  • Decide what changes you need to make, e.g. noun to verb. Remember that adverbs in English usually end in -ly.
  • Check your spelling, especially when adding a suffix.
  • Remember that answers may depend on the whole context, not just the words before and after the gap.
  • Make sure your completed text makes sense and is grammatically correct.

Changing word forms
Adjective-> Adverb = ly (Real -> Really)
Verb -> Noun = ion, ance, y, ence, ment (Decide -> Decision)
Noun -> Adjective= ous, ful, less, ive (Danger -> Dangerous)

Tips!
  • Decide on the part of speech the key word is, and what can go with it.
  • Think about what the question tests and all the changes you need to make.
  • Check you haven’t left out or added any information.
  • Look for any other changes you need to make, e.g. adjective to adverb.
  • Make sure your answer fits the words both before and after the gap.
  • Write no more than eight words and no fewer than three.
  • Decide if the sentence is positive or negative.
  • Write only the words needed to fill the gap (the missing words and the key word) not the whole sentence.
  • Check your spelling. You do lose marks for mistakes.

Changing word forms
Adjective-> Adverb = ly (Real -> Really)
Verb -> Noun = ion, ance, y, ence, ment (Decide -> Decision)
Noun -> Adjective= ous, ful, less, ive (Danger -> Dangerous)

Exam tips!
  • Sometimes more than one answer is possible, but you must only give one of them.
  • Remember that contractions such as I’d count as two words, except can’t (which is short for cannot).
  • If you can’t think of the whole answer, write down what you can – you might get one mark.

Slide 29 - Tekstslide

1. dead -> deadly
2. argue -> argument
3. defense -> defensive
Step by step guide
If you've studied the word 'spite' before you probably know it comes in the phrase 'in spite of'. So the temptation with this answer is to put 'in spite' before 'of experience'. Something like:

Anna got the job in spite of experience in public relations.

No! That doesn't make any sense. If she had experience in public relations we wouldn't need to use the phrase 'in spite of'. So 'in spite of' has to go at the start. Yes, we have 'of' twice, and it looks weird, but it's the only way.

As you can see, there's a lot involved in this part of the exam. You'll need to study all kinds of grammar, phrasal verbs, set phrases etc etc etc.

Slide 30 - Tekstslide

1. dead -> deadly
2. argue -> argument
3. defense -> defensive
Anna got the job in spite of .......................... of experience in public relations.

We've used 3 words and can use a maximum of 3 more. But the good news is that we've already got 1 of the 2 points available.

The next part of our answer has to mean 'she didn't have much experience'. How about:

Anna got the job in spite of not having a lot of experience in public relations.

Sounds good! But it's 7 words. Too many! So we try again. By now I'm anxious to move on to the next question so I'll just think for 15 seconds or so. Fortunately the answer pops into my head right away because I studied really hard:

Anna got the job in spite of her lack of experience in public relations.
As you can see, there's a lot involved in this part of the exam. You'll need to study all kinds of grammar, phrasal verbs, set phrases etc etc etc. So study it is!
