Lesson Goal

At the end of this lesson you:

• will understand, recognise and be able to use the Past Simple, Past Continuous, and Past Perfect tenses correctly in various contexts.

Which of the following sentences is in the past simple?

1. I was walking in the park when it started to rain.
2. I watched the movie before yesterday.
3. I had seen the movie before.

Past Simple

Form: Subject + verb (past form)

Use: Completed actions in the past (e.g., "I visited London last summer").

4. Text Analysis: Recognizing Tenses (15 minutes)

Objective: Practice identifying and understanding the past tenses in context.

Materials: Printed or projected text.

Activity: Provide students with a short text (see below) in which they need to underline or highlight the verbs in the Past Simple, Past Continuous, and Past Perfect. Afterward, ask students to work in pairs or small groups to discuss the tense use.

Sample Text:

"Last weekend, I went to a party. When I arrived, everyone was dancing and having fun. I had just finished my homework when my friend invited me. I had never been to such a party before. I was talking to some people when I noticed my old school teacher was there too! I didn’t expect that."

Follow-up Questions:

What action happened first in the text? (Past Perfect: "I had just finished my homework.")

What were the ongoing actions in the past? (Past Continuous: "was dancing," "was talking")

Which events are completed actions? (Past Simple: "went," "arrived," "noticed")

Class Discussion: Have the students explain their answers. If necessary, clarify any misunderstandings and reinforce tense rules.

3. They were playing football when I arrived.

Past Continuous

Form: Subject + was/were + verb (ing form)

Use: Actions happening at a specific moment in the past, or two simultaneous actions (e.g., "I was reading when the phone rang").

Write a sentence in the
past continous.

Which of the following is in the past perfect?

1. I had never seen such a beautiful place before I visited Paris.
2. I didn't know she was married.
3. I was seeing her every day last month.

Past Perfect

Form: Subject + had + past participle

Use: An action that was completed before another action in the past (e.g., "She had left before I arrived").

Write a sentence in the
past perfect.

Choose the correct form of the verb to complete the sentence:
"By the time we arrived, they __________ (already/eat) dinner."

1. already ate
2. had already eaten
3. were eating
