Past simple: look at the following sentences and identify patterns.

1. I played soccer yesterday.
2. She visited her grandmother last weekend.
3. They watched a movie last night.
4. We talked on the phone for two hours.
5. He didn’t clean his room.
6. Did you finish your homework?

• What do these sentences have in common?
• How is the verb formed in the past?
• How do we make negatives and questions?
• Which signal words do you see?

Past simple .

When? wanneer we het hebben over dingen die in het verleden zijn gebeurd en zjin afgerond. 

(yesterday, last week, a while ago, in ...(2012), this morning, the other day) 

Bevestigende zinnen

Hoe? I,you,he,she,it,we,they + hele werkwoord + ed 

+ She climbed a mountain last week. 

+ They played soccer this morning.

+ We baked a cake for my mom yesterday.

Ontkennende zinnen en vraagzinnen in 

de past simple

In de past simple verandert het werkwoord alleen in bevestigende zinnen. Bij ontkennende zinnen en vraagzinnen gebruik je altijd het hele werkwoord (de 'to' vorm, zonder -ed).

Bij ontkennende zinnen gebruik je didn't (did not) + het hele werkwoord.

- She didn't do her homework yesterday. 

- They didn't watch the movie last night.

➡️ Let op: Het werkwoord blijft in de basisvorm (dus niet "didn't did" of "didn't watched").

Bij vraagzinnen gebruik je Did + onderwerp + hele werkwoord.

? Did she wash the dishes? (niet did they washed)

? Did they watch the movie? (niet did they watched)

Uitzonderingen.

ww die eindigen met een -e: alleen + d	I baked a cake yesterday. You hoped for a good grade.	bake > baked hope > hoped
ww die eindigen op medeklinker + -y: verandert naar -ied	We tried to warn you. She studied a lot.	try > tried study > studied
ww die eindigen op een klinker+medeklinker: medeklinker verdubbelt	He stopped a car. Hailey admitted that she didn't like the painting.	stop > stopped admit > admitted
ww die eindigen op klinker + -l: l verdubbelt	They travelled to Wales. They cancelled the tour.	travel > travelled cancel > cancelled
