Slide 26 - Tekstslide
cleft sentences
In a cleft sentences a
single
message is divided (cleft) into two clauses.
Cleft sentences are used to focus on a particular part of the sentence and to emphasize a message.
Use of ‘an extra’ relative clause (a clause that says something about a noun), while a simple sentence is possible as well.

a letter
which arrived three weeks later.

at this restaurant
that I really like.

The only thing
I need is you.
Slide 27 - Tekstslide
how you form cleft sentences
Use
‘only’ or ‘all’
All I need is you

a wh- (what, when, where, why) sentence
. What we need to do is help her
Use
‘it’ + form of ‘be’
