It isn’t always easy to identify adjectives and adverbs!

Adjectives 
Tell you something about a noun or a pronoun

Place: before a noun or after it when you use a linking verb

Linking verbs
connect the subject of a sentence  with words that describe or identify that subject =  adjectives (or adjective phrases) or nouns (or noun phrases).

Examples:
 be, become, seem, appear, smell, look, taste, sound, and feel.

Adverbs
Tell you something about verbs, adjectives or situations.

Place: depending on the adverb!

Used to compare persons, animals, or things with one another

to compare with = used to compare persons/ animals, things of a similar order 

to compare to = used to compare things/persons/ animals of a different order ('Shall I compare thee to a summer's day').

Degrees of comparison

De trappen van vergelijking:

1. Brownie is a small dog: small  = bijvoeglijk naamwoord.

2. Brownie is smaller than Spot.

3. Brownie is the smallest dog.


Zin 2 is de vergrotende trap. Daar heb je  'than' bij nodig.
Zin 3 is de overtreffende trap. Daar heb je 'the' bij nodig.

Comparisons
It's a cold day today.

It is definitely colder than it was yesterday.

The Met office said it is quite possibly the coldest day of the year.

Bijvoeglijk naamwoorden die eindigen op een klinker + medeklinker:

Medeklinker verdubbelt.

Elder alleen bij vergelijking gezinsleden:
He is my elder brother.
He is the eldest of two brothers.
But: Josh is older than Mike.
