Introductie

A LessonUp Original lesson on International Women's Day. A lesson that teaches students how the day came about and which women have already been trailblazers. But it lets them discover for themselves the importance of this international day by deliberately asking them for their opinions. Let your class discuss, reflect on their own behaviour, statements and benefits and get them thinking about their future.

Instructies

Preparation:
  • Go through all the slides, including reading the notes accompanying the slide.
  • Decide which slides you do not want to include in the lesson. To do so, save the lesson, go to the editor and click in the left thumbnail bar on the eye to the right of the slide. The slide will then become transparent and will not be included in your lesson.
During the lesson:
  • Try to talk about equality with your class in a respectful way. Everyone is entitled to his or her opinion.
  • Of course, you can also teach this lesson in parts and spread it over several lessons. Or add the slides that appeal to you to your own lesson.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

The aim of this slide is for students to realise that we lived in different times and that it is actually not even that far back that women did not have the right to vote.

Ask questions like:
- How do you feel about the fact that it took the UN over 50 years to officially recognise International Women's Day?
- Were you familiar with this day? How would that come about? And how do you feel about it?

?
Do you think International Women's Day
should continue to be celebrated worldwide?
_
Yes
I don’t know
I don’t care
No

Slide 5 - Poll

Based on this poll, you can start an interesting discussion.

Most of the time, girls will feel more strongly about International Women’s Day than boys.

More discussion questions:
  • How would life be different if women were not allowed to vote?
  • What if women couldn’t have high-level jobs anymore?
  • Why should we continue to talk about this?

?
When do you think International Women's Day will no longer be needed?

It is 2045, the world has changed. We live in a gender-equal society. You have developed into an adult with a job, ambitions and a home.

What does your life look like? What are your ideals, what is your profession and who are the people around you?

In the "Future Self" assignment, think about what it means to you to live in a world where everyone has equal opportunities.
Options
Diary entry: Write a day from your life in the future. What do you do? What is your profession, passion or role in society?
Narrative: Write a short story about yourself in 2045. Tell how you fulfilled your dreams and what the world around you looks like. What does equality mean to your parents, your siblings or...your children?
Drawing: Create an illustration of your future self in your dream world. Add short descriptions to show what your future holds.
Design: Design gender-neutral clothes to be worn in 2045. What kind of fabrics will we wear then? What colours are in fashion and how sustainable is your outfit?

Slide 27 - Tekstslide

Decide how long you will give students for this assignment.
Do you let them find inspiration on the internet first? Or can they start right away?

Afterwards, see who wants to share and explain the final result with the group. On the next slide, students can upload their results in a photo question.
Are you working without devices? Then skip the photo question.
