After the fall of the Roman Empire, another empire emerged called the Byzantine empire (which was basically the eastern part of the old Roman Empire). While the centre of the Roman empire was Rome, the centre of the new Byzantine empire was Constantinople (today known as Istanbul in Turkey), or otherwise known as New Rome.
