What comes to mind when you think about Russia?

Russia is the largest country in the world in km2. 

It's huge landmass has a massive effect on their climate --> mostly continental climate

Continental Climates: extremely warm summers, and extremely cold winters. 

A small part of Russia is also located in the polar circle:

Polar climate.

Warm air from the tropics near the south of Russia are blocked by the huge mountainrange (Caucasus) in southern Russia

The climate affects the soil.

 

In the north:

Low evaporation, high precipitation.

• Podzol: very sandy and therefore unfertile soil.

South of podzol, the balance between precipitation and evaporation gets better

• Chernozem/Black Earth: soil type suitable for agriculture

The closer you get to the polar areas in the north, you'll find permafrost. 

Permafrost is a permanently frozen landscape, of which only the upper layer melts during summer --> swampy landscape.

 

Russia's Climate struggles

1. It's hard to build in areas with a permafrost soil. 
2. Due to the climate and landscapes creating infrastructure on land and water is hard
