Par. 5: Priviliges of First and Second Estate
  • First Estate = The Clergy
  • They owned 10% of the land while they were 1% of the population
  • They could tax people but did not pay taxes themselves

  • Second Estate = The Nobles
  • They owned 20% of the land while they were 1,5% of the population
  • They paid hardly any tax
  • They held important jobs in church / government / army

  • Estates                         = medieval layers of society (3 Estates)
  • Bourgeoisie                   = rich citizens in the cities
  • Estates general              = a meeting of the three Estates

  • Reactionaries                 = people who said the changes had gone far enough

What was left of the French Revolution?
  • Rulers were back on the throne in most countries
      BUT:
  • Some changes, such as the Code Napoléon stayed
  • Most countries had now parliaments that made the king less       powerful!
