Why note-taking?
Practical skill
Keeps you alert
Gets your brain (more) involved

Slide 3 - Tekstslide

Why pen & paper?
Research shows that people who takes notes on paper remember the material better than people who take notes on a laptop (Mueller & Oppenheimer, 2014).
This is likely due to laptop users copying everything they hear word for word, without fully taking in the information.
Writing by hand generally isn't fast enough to do so, which forces these note-takers to interact more with the material, and sift through it as they go along.
Consequently, we advise you to take notes by hand as much as possible.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

How?
(Cornell method)
  1. Divide your page into 3 sections. A thin vertical column on the left, a wide vertical column on the right, and a horizontal section at the bottom of the page.
  2. On the left you'll write key words;
    on the right you'll write your main notes;
    at the bottom you'll summarize the content in a couple of sentences.
  3. Use your own words, and add colors, symbols, and signs to organize it in a way that makes sense to you

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

IMPORTANT
  1. Focus on key words and phrases.
  2. Connect the main idea to relevant facts: dates, names, theories, definitions. Eliminate less important information.
  3. Don't just write down everything that you hear. Process the information as you go along.
  4. Aim to add to your existing knowledge with your notes: you don't need to write down things you already know.
