What strikes you most about the language and content of this scene?

Benvolio is a Montague and Romeo’s cousin. In this line, he attempts to stop the fight. He does, however, draw his sword.

Benvolio looks a bit like the word benevolent ( as it starts with the same letters). Benevolent means all loving, this suggests that Benvolio will be the peacemaker and end the fights ratherthan start them. This is contradicted by Tybalt who starts the fights and laughs at Benvolio’s peace.

A long sword is a massive blade, designed to be wielded with two hands. Old Capulet trying to reach for one is intended to be humorous, to emphasize how old and out of touch the feud is.

The continuous use of ‘sir’ in this exchange could be said to be sarcastic as in reality each household has little respect for the other.
