Gerunds = verb + ing that is used as a noun

 a verb (ww) + ing = noun (zelfstandig naamwoord)

We call this: the gerund

shop (verb) + ing = shopping (noun)                   = gerund

game (verb) + ing = gaming                                     = gerund

 eat (verb) + ing = eating                                            = gerund 

Een gerund is het hele werkwoord + ing dat als zelfstandig naamwoord wordt gebruikt. Je gebruikt de gerund:

1. als onderwerp van een zin.

Bedenk een ander voorbeeld waarbij je de gerund als onderwerp in een zin gebruikt.

Smoking is bad for your health.

Roken in slecht voor je gezondheid.

When to use a Gerund

Je gebruikt de gerund (ww+ing:

• Als zelfstandig naamwoord- Smoking is bad for your health.
• na ww die een mening uitdrukken (hate/ like/ love/enjoy)- I hate doing my homework.
• na deze ww start/ begin/ continue/ stop- Continue working, class.
• na voorzetsels (after/ before/ while/ at etc.) - After visiting the museum, they went to a restaurant
• na bepaalde uitdrukkingen: It's no use / It's (not) worth it / don't mind / to look forward to    Vb: I look forward to hearing from  you soon.

 To-infinitive?

Deze wordt gebruikt:

• Na werkwoord die een gevoel/gedachte uitdrukken (hesitate/ hope/ want/ expect/ choose) Ex.: I expect you to do that.
• Na ww die 'iets zeggen'  uitdrukken (agree/ promise/ demand/ forbid/ refuse) - Ex.: I promise to do that. (
• In combinatie met would love / would hate/ would like etc. Ex.: I would love to get there.
• Na de ww: learn/ manage/ fail/ tend- Ex: . I tend to listen to you all the time. 

This student refuses to do his homework.

I would love to visit Australia one day.

Let op! Bij to remember zijn twee mogelijkheden

• Betekent het 'iets onthouden'dan gebruik je infinitive
• Betekent het 'iets herinneren' dan gebruik je de gerund
