Reported speech (Unit 7)

Report the question, begin with Harry asked me. 'Why haven't you tidied your bedroom?'

Complete the sentence:

Reporting verbs

In English, we can use other verbs instead of say and tell when we report statements. 

Examples: add, admit, agree, argue, claim, confirm, explain etc.

The structure of the sentence might differ:

- He agreed to wear a tie. (verb + infinitive + to)

- He apologised for keeping us waiting. (verb + preposition + gerund)

Report this sentence:
'I'm sorry I was so late,' said Susannah. (apologise)

Coherence & Unity

                                                                 

• Mind the 4-paragraph lay-out  & white line inbetween paragraphs
  

• Use linking words to connect paragraphs and sentences for coherence (clear and logical sequence of paragraphs & sentences)
  

• Don't use I/we/you, but use they/people/researchers/journalists/it is believed etc.
  

• Use synynoms for word variety and interesting reading
  

• Combine sentences into one to avoid using "that" too often & to avoid repetition of words.
