  • Roads were not safe
  • Less trade
  • cities disapeared
  • no strong kings
  • conclusion: most people became farmers again (agrarian society)

  • Farmers seek protection with a more powerful farmer
  • His domain is called a manor
  • Three parts:
  • - demesne: here lives the lord of the manor
  • - farm holdings: here lived the small farmers
  • - wasteland: forests, marshes and rivers

The deal (manorial system)
the lord:
- protected the peasants
- gave them farm holdings to use
The peasants:
- give up a part of what they produce
- have to do servile duties
- most of them become serfs, some of them are free farmers
