Je gaat deze lessonup les meer te weteh komen over Unesco, een organisatie die zich inzet voor o.a. het behoud van cultuur

Huh? Wat?

De in 1945 opgerichte organisatie voor Onderwijs, Wetenschap en Cultuur van de Verenigde Naties, zet zich o.a.in voor de bestrijding van armoede en duurzame ontwikkeling.  Een van de onderdelen daarvan is het Werelderfgoedprogramma, dat van start is gegaan in 1972 en resulteerde in de Werelderfgoedlijst. Op die lijst staan inmiddels meer dan 1.000 monumenten die vanwege hun culturele, historische of wetenschappelijke betekenis een bepaalde status genieten. Dit erfgoed kan zowel cultureel als natuurlijk zijn en heeft als gemeenschappelijke deler dat het wordt beschouwd als onvervangbaar uniek en eigendom van de hele wereld. Een plek komt niet zomaar op de lijst: daartoe dient het door één van de bij de UNESCO aangesloten landen te worden voorgedragen, waarna een speciale commissie over de toelating beslist. Je kunt dus gerust spreken van een elitegezelschap.

De Chinese Muur, de Amsterdamse grachten, de piramides in Egypte, maar ook de Grand Canyon in de Verenigde Staten en het Great Barrier Reef in Australië: allemaal zijn ze terug te vinden op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst. Het is zo’n soort keurmerk dat door de gelukkigen gretig wordt ingezet: ‘Kom bij ons kijken, want wij staan op de UNESCO Werelderfgoedlijst.
