De rede wordt als een retorisch meesterwerk beschouwd. King paste allusies toe als citaten uit de Bijbel, de Amerikaanse Onafhankelijkheidsverklaring, de Grondwet van de Verenigde Staten, en de Emancipatieproclamatie en de Gettysburg Address, beide van president Abraham Lincoln.
