Additional passenger data is required for some countries outside the Schengen area, to prevent terrorism/serious crime.
This must be completed by the airline upon check-in:
full name
date of birth
address at destination
e-mail address
phone number to be reached when at destination (2nd for emergency)

travel authorisation
Some countries require pax to apply for a travel authorisation in advance. Well known examples: ESTA (USA) and ETA (Australia and Canada).
ESTA can be applied online for trips of up to 90 days and must be applied for at least 72 hours before departure. It is possible to do this last minute at Schiphol as well.
