Auxiliary verbs = hulpwerkwoorden
Why do we use auxiliary verbs? Sometimes main verbs need a little help.
  • Main verbs: present simple tense and past simple tense
  • Auxiliary verbs: in all other tenses, in questions and in negations

Most frequently used auxiliary verbs : Can; Will/Shall; Could; Should; Would
  • She can swim.
  • I will take the bus tomorrow. / We shall see.
  • I could have stayed in bed…
  • You should go to a doctor.
  • I would like a cup of tea.
