Question:  What is an 'adjacent square'?

Answer: Adjacent squares are next to one another, or on top of one another.

For example: 1  and  -3,  or  2  and  -1.

Question:  Why cannot we move from 1 to 3 ?

Question:  Why cannot we move from 1 to 3 ?

Answer:  Because we are not allowed to move 'diagonally'!

+ choose for the 'greater than' or 'smaller than' sign.

Solution:

-7        x -6 = 45            -17 -             = -17 - 25 = - 42  

So the sign for 'greater than' has to be used!

(−5)​2​​

As you can see, the numbers are multiplied by each other.

Solution:

2 x 3 = 6,    3 x -6 = -18   and   -1 x -3 = 3,  so

6, -6 and -1 are the numbers to be filled in.

a Magic Square.

Try to find out what makes it 'magic' and explain this in the next slide!

There is a strong regularity (= regelmaat) in it:

Horizontal:                  Vertical:                      Diagonally:                   

4 + -6 + 8 = 6               4 + 6 + -4 = 6            4 + 2 + 0 = 6

6 + 2 + -2 = 6                -6 + 2 + 10 = 6          -4 + 2 + 8 = 6

-4 + 10 + 0 = 6             8 + -2 + 0 = 6
