Why do Earthquakes happen?

Note: plate tectonics 

The Earth's crust is made of 
different pieces: plates (platen)

The plates 'float' on top of the 
magma from the mantle. 

When the magma moves, so do 
the plates.

Note: two types of plates

There are two types of plates.
Oceanic plates: 
Heavy and mainly under
the oceans (with parts of land).

Continental plates:

Lighter plates, mainly with 
land on top of it. 

Last class: Inside the Earth

Crust - Aardkorst 
Where we live on. 

Mantle - aardmantel 
Molten rock and magma which moves

Core - aardkern 
Solid, made of iron and different minerals

What do you think happens when the plates start to move due to the magma?

Homework

Find out for each of the plate movements (divergent, convergent and transform) what can happen as a result (think about: earthquakes, volcanoes form... etc). 

Write this down in your notebook.

Divergent:
Plates are moving away

Convergent: 
Plates move towards each other

Transform:
Plates move past each other
