Past Simple / Continuous

What is the Past Simple?

How and when to use it:

verb+ed

climb -> climbed, design -> designed

NEGATIVE AND QUESTIONS: did (not) + verb

did not climb, didn't design

did you climb? did they design?

We use the Past Simple to tell something happened in the past  and is done.

They ... (want) to get that costume yesterday.
He ...... .......... (not celebrate) Carnivale last year.
Last year I .... (cry) a lot because there was no Carnivale.
... you ... (make) your costume yourself last year?

I ... (drink) a lot of cola last night.

What is the Past Continuous?

How and when to use it:

Was/Were + verb+ing

play -> was/were playing        hear -> was/were hearing

He was playing games.

they were playing games.

We use the Past Continuous when something is happening in the past over some time. (langere gebeurtenis in het verleden)

When I ...... (order) some drinks, I met some friends at the bar.
They ...... (participate) in the parade when I last saw them.
He ...... ....... (not wear) a mask while he partied on at the café.
Mr. Gerards ..... (watch) Champions League while he made this lesson.
.... they ... (play) some games while the teacher entered the room?

Using both Simple & Continuous

When I was ordering some drinks // I met some friends at the bar.

Mr. Gerards was watching Champions League // while he made this lesson.
