Slide 8 - Tekstslide

GET READY
  • Close your laptop and put it in your bag.
  • Close your textbook
  • Grab a pencil and a ruler/geometric triangle

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

Showing forces

We use arrows to show two things about the force:
The direction = the direction the arrow points at
The size = the length of the arrow

Also important:
Starting point of the arrow

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Drawing forces
  • Make the worksheet drawing forces
  • Make the questions ALONE
  • Do not use your laptop!

Are you stuck?:
  • Check your textbook
  • Ask the person next to you (WHISPERING ONLY!)
  • Ask your teacher

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Short break
  • Do not move from your seat
  • Keep your volume down

§3.3 SPEED

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

§3.3 SPEED
  • I can explain what speed is.
  • I can calculate the speed in m/s and in km/h (when you know the distance and time).
  • I can calculate the distance when you know the time and the speed.
  • I can calculate the time when you know the distance and the speed

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

§3.3 SPEED
KEY WORDS:
  • Motion
  • Speed
  • km/h
  • m/s
  • Distance
  • Time

Slide 16 - Tekstslide

What is speed?
Speed is a measure of how fast an object moves. In other words, how far of a distance an object moves in a certain amount of time.

Speed is measured in:
meters per second (m/s)
Kilometers per hour (km/h)

Slide 17 - Tekstslide

Average speed

As an object moves its speed is constantly changing, though this is very difficult to measure.

Therefore we calculate the average speed, which is the speed over a certain amount of time.

Here a car is constantly changing
its speed, but we only calculate the
average speed throughout the journey.

Slide 18 - Tekstslide

Calculating speed

To calculate speed two things are needed:
  • The distance in meters (or kilometers)
  • The time in seconds (or hours)

The formula for calculating speed is:

The unit for speed is m/s (or km/h)

Example question
Ms de Vreede drives her car to school.
It takes her 15 minutes and she lives 8 km away.

  • Calculate her speed in m/s.
  • Use FICA

Slide 21 - Tekstslide

Example question answer
Ms de Vreede drives her car to school. It takes her 15 minutes and she lives 8 km away. (Calculate her speed in m/s)
  • F:   speed = distance / time
  • I:    8 km and 15 min
  • C:  speed = meter / seconds
  •       8 km --> meter                      8 x 1000 = 8000 meter
  •       15 min --> seconds             15 x 60 = 900 seconds
  •       8000m / 900s = 8.89 m/s
  • A:  8.89 m/s

Slide 22 - Tekstslide

Homework:
  • Complete all exercises of §3.3
  • Study glossary list §3.3 on StudyGo
