Grammar possessive pronouns

There are 3 ways to indicate possession in English:

's

of

's > Is used to indicate possession of ...

• one person/animal 

• plurals that do not end in -s

 

• expressions about time

• my dad's bicycle./the dog's tail/ the baker's (shop)
• the children's toys/the men's room

• today's newspaper/ an hour's walk to school
  

Names/Names ending in -s

The rule is the same for names ending in -s.

That's Sam's Playstation.

James and Joe's friends are Jack and Jill.

Prince Charles's mom is Queen Elizabeth.

' is used to indicate possession of plurals ending in -s

• Meervouden die eindigen op een -s 

The dogs' food.

The boys' bikes were stolen.

of > is used to indicate possession of inanimate objects and places

(Dingen, plaatsen of landen)

• geographical locations

The wheel of the car came off./The name of the ship is "The Black Pearl".
