Past Continuous

Je gebruikt de Past Continuous om te zeggen dat iets in het verleden een tijd duurde of aan de gang was.

Past Continuous

Vorm:                     was / were + hele werkwoord + -ing

I was watching the bride.

Most of the guests were dancing.

Dad wasn't sleeping during the ceremony.

My brothers weren't laughing at you.

Was it raining that day?

Were you waiting for the birthday boy?

Past Continuous

Let op de spellingsveranderingen bij het maken van de -ing-vorm:

1.

Als het werkwoord eindigt op een -e, laat je die weg:

to lose    ->    losing                                      Our team was clearly losing.

to leave  ->    leaving                                    We were just leaving.

Past Continuous

Als het werkwoord eindigt op een medeklinker met één klinker ervoor, verdubbel je de medeklinker:

to run      ->     running                                      I was running as quickly as I could.

to sit       ->      sitting                                         We were all sitting in the living room.

Let op! Dit geldt niet als het werkwoord eindigt in -w of -x:

to snow  ->     snowing                                    It was snowing all day.

to fix        ->     fixing                                          Dad was fixing my bike.

Als het werkwoord eindigt op -ie, verandert dat in een -y:

to die   ->     dying                                           The cat was dying when we found it.

to lie    ->     lying                                             You were lying, weren't you?
