What does the leaf do?

• The palisade layer does photosynthesis.
• The stomata do gas exchange.
• The spongy layer stores gasses.
• The veins transport chemicals into and out of the leaf.
• The cuticle and epidermis protect the leaf.

What does the stem do?

• The xylem transports water and chemicals up the plant.
• The phloem transports water and chemicals down the plant.
• The stem itself supports the weight of the leaves, flowers & fruits.

Structures of a root

What do the roots do?

• The root cap senses where there is water.
• The primary and lateral roots anchor the plant in the round and provide support.
• The root hairs absorb the water and nutrients from the soil.

The plant absorbs sunlight through the palisade cells.

The plant absorbs water and nutrients through the roothair cells.

The plant transports water and nutrients up through the xylem vessels.

The plant transports sugars and nutrients down through the phloem vessels.

The plant absorbs carbon dioxide through the stomata cells.
