The Internet

The Internet started in the 1960s. The United States Department of Defense started it because they wanted a computer network to help the American army. In the 1970s, scientists worked on it and learned how to send messages between computers. Then in the 1980s, telephone companies made it possible to communicate on the computer network in many more countries. An International computer language was born, and the internet went global. So, did people find the internet useful back then? Many people did not use the Internet because they did not have computers to use it.

• How can you tell the verb is in the past tense?

- The time is mentioned (1960s, 1970s, 1980s)
- The sentence describes something that happened in the past and is now finished.

- The verbs are in the past tense, ending in '-ed'.

Grammar

We gebruiken de Past Simple om aan te geven dat iets in het verleden gebeurd is en nu afgelopen is.

Vaak staat er een tijd genoemd in de zin, bijvoorbeeld: Last week, yesterday, a while ago, in the 1980s.

Het werkwoord verandert als de zin in de Past Simple vorm staat. Er komt '-ed' achter het hele werkwoord:

My father cooked last night / I watched the news this morning.

Een paar uitzonderingen!

Eindigt het hele werkwoord op een -e, dan komt er alleen een -d achter het woord:

'Yesterday during lunch he shared his food'

Eindigt het werkwoord op een medeklinker + y, Dan verandert de y in een i:

'My sister married her boyfriend last summer'

Maar wel gewoon:

'She played the piano one week ago'   - Waarom?

• Om vragen te maken in de Past Simple gebruik je:
  Did + het onderwerp + het hele werkwoord.
  Er komt dan GEEN -ed achter het werkwoord, 'did' is namelijk al de verleden tijdsvorm! 
• Om ontkenningen te maken in de Past Simple gebruik je:
  Didn't + het hele werkwoord
  Ook hier komt er geen -ed achter het werkwoord, 'didn't' of 'did not' is al verleden tijd!
