What is a syllable (lettergreep)?

1. A sound chunk
2. A word
3. A letter
4. A consonant

Syllables (lettergrepen)

-A syllable is a word chunk. You can divide every word into syllables.

-A syllable always has 1 vowel (klinker) sound, no more, no less

Example: Ambulance

Am | Bu | Lance

Split these words into syllables:

Banana | Music | Syllable | Awesome

Now, let's talk stress

-Stress = Klemtoon

-In every word, one syllable has stress

-Deze lettergreep spreek je duidelijker uit

Which syllable in Ambulance has stress?

Look at the words from the last question again. Which syllable has stress?

Let's practice one more time. Split these words into syllables, and write down which syllable has stress.

Now, let's talk poetry

-Many different forms, but one of them is limerick.

-What are the rules?

Example limerick

There was a young man of South Bay,
Making fireworks one summer day.
He dropped his cigar,
In the gunpowder jar,

McDonald's had a clown named Ron
Who changed his name to Don
Then he took up residency
In the American presidency
Now we all can't wait 'til he's gone

Limericks

A limerick always has 5 sentences, or lines.

Line 1, 2 and 5 rhyme. Line 3 and 4 rhyme, and are shorter.

Rhyme scheme AABBA

Limericks are often funny or dirty.
