Rules for commas
In English: dependent and independent clauses.
Dependent clauses can stand on their own whereas independent clauses cannot.
Cleo is a good singer but she’s an even better dancer.
  • "but" is a coordinating conjunction and is always preceded by a comma when you have two independent clauses .
Life is but a dream.
  • "but" is not connecting two indpendent clauses here.
