Past simple

We use the past simple for an action or event at a definite point in the past.

• We played football yesterday afternoon.
• I walked to school this morning.

Past simple spelling rules

• Verb + -ed: play > played
• Verb ending in -e, we add -d: dance > danced
  
• Verb ending in a consonant and -y, we change -y to -i and add -ed: hurry > hurried
• Verb ending in a short vowel and a consonant, we double the consonant: stop > stopped
