Which reading strategies do you know?

• scanning: to find specific information that you need to answer a question. 
• skimming: to understand the topic and main points of a text.
• intensive reading: to understand the details of a text.

Signal Words

Signal words help the writer to get their ideas into shape. Therefore, they can help us to understand the structure of a text and identify the writer’s views. Besides, they are essential for quickly locating key information for a question because the answers are often just around these words.

Signal Words

Compare/contrast: however, but, different from, similar to, although, despite and while

Sequence (volgorde): first, firstly, second, secondly, third, thirdly, next, in addition, besides, moreover, furthermore and at last.

Cause/ result: because, since, due to, so, therefore
