The future

• There are four different verb tenses that we can use to talk about the future 

1. Present simple
2. Present continuous
3. To be going to
4. Will / shall

• We are going to be discussing these in order of likelihood: From most to least likely!

Present simple

Present simple is used for fixed things like schedules:

1. Our plane lands at 10.40 AM.
2. The bike tour doesn't start in front of the park.
3. What time is your next class?
   

Present continuous

Present continuous is used for future arrangements and plans. These have been arranged and are most likely going to happen.

1. I am cooking dinner tonight.
2. James is running a marathon in April.
3. We are visiting our parents on Sunday.
4. Unfortunately, their top scorer isn’t coming.
5. Are you going there by bike?

Tip!

You often see a date/day added in these sentences

To be going to

• We use "to be going to" for 2 reasons!
  
• Form: to be + going to + infinitive (hele werkwoord)

• 1) When we  talk about plans or intentions (before the conversation has started)

1. I am going to visit my aunt next week.
2. We’re not going to attend a concert later this month.
3. Are they going to take the bus?
4. We are going to take a train to Italy this summer.

To be going to

• 2) With a prediction based on evidence / a clue
  
  

1. Look at those dark clouds! It is going to rain today.
2. It’s 8.15. I’m going to be late.
3. Be careful! You're going to fall!

• You don't always need the reason in the sentence. In sentence 3 I can assume I can see why someone is going to fall

Will/shall

The form

Will/shall

• We use will/shall for 4 different reasons
• Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 1) For a spontaneous decision during a conversation

1. I will help you move the couch.
2. There’s no more bread – I’ll go and buy some.
3. I’ll have a sandwich and a cup of tea.

Will/shall

We use will/shall for 4 different reasons
Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 2) For a prediction based on an opinion or uncertainty about the future
• (often in combination with "don't think", "probably" or "possibly")

1. We will win tomorrow's game.
2. I don’t think dad will be angry.
3. I’ll probably get really nervous before my speech.

Will/shall

We use will/shall for 4 different reasons
Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 3) For a wish, spontaneous offers, refusals, promises, suggestions or requests

1. I hope she will give me a present.
2. I’ll get the door for you.
3. If I have to choose then I won’t go to her party.
4. We promise we will be on time.
5. Will you cook dinner for me tonight?

Will/shall

We use will/shall for 4 different reasons
Form: will/shall + infinitive (heel werkwoord)

• 4) For facts or things that happen so often that you can expect it to happen anyway (general truths)

1. A well-mannered person will hold the door for an elderly person.
2. He won’t be on time, he’s always late.
