A few rules about gerund (-ing) / infinitive form (to + infintive)
3 Gerund rules
  1. Verb as subject = gerund
  2. After prepositions: gerund
  3. After verbs such as advise, avoid, enjoy, finish, practice, quit, and suggest: gerund 
3 to + infinitive rules 
  1. Adjective + infinitive
  2. Noun + infinitive
  3. After verbs such as  ask, choose, decide, get, need, plan, promise, and want: infinitive
1. Gerund or infinitive is never the main verb. (I studying, or I to study is incorrect).
2. Gerun or infinitive is an action word (a verb), used as a noun (I like studying / I like to study). 3.
3. After verbs such as forget, like, remember, stop both gerund and to- infinitive is possible, but the meaning changes.

How to make participle clauses
  1. Identify the clause you want to shorten.
  2. Identify the verb in the clause. 
  3. Turn the verb into the right participle 
        -> do the two actions happen at the same time or is one already finished?
        -> Is it a passive sentence or an active sentence? 
  4. Remove linking words & subject, add clause to beginning of a sentence, separate by comma.(before and when are not removed).
