Start ch3: the circulatory system

- What is the circulatory system?

- §3.1 Blood and its parts

- Goal:  You can name the components of blood with their features and functions.

What does circulation mean? Ex. A teacher circulates the room answering the students questions.

1. To move around.
2. To move in a circle.
3. To move backwards.
4. To move up and down.

The circulatory system

A system of tubes that moves substances around your body. 

The heart muscle powers this movement.

What do we know already?

• Unit 1: Blood carries oxygen & CO2
• Unit 2: Blood carries nutrients

What moves around in your body via the circulatory system?

1. cells, tissues, organs
2. eyes, ears, stomach
3. blood, food, oxygen
4. blood, nutrients, oxygen, CO2

Blood - What comes to mind?

Blood

• Function: Blood transports everything your body needs
• Ex. heat, nutrients, oxygen, CO2, waste products

• Blood contains:

1. Plasma: plasma proteins (ex. fibrinogen), water, dissolved substances 
2. Solids: red and white blood cells, platelets

Summary 

• Blood consists of blood plasma (about 55%) and blood cells and platelets (about 45%).

• Blood plasma: water with plasma proteins (such as fibrinogen) and dissolved substances (including salts).

– Blood plasma transports oxygen (to a small extent), nutrients, antibodies, carbon dioxide and other waste products.

– Fibrinogen plays a role in clotting.

What is blood?

Red blood cells

• Small round discs
• No nucleus
• Red pigment: haemoglobin
• Function: absorb and release oxygen

White blood cells

•  Function: destroy pathogens (bacteria) 
• Do have a nucleus
• No fixed shape
• Can squeeze through openings

Pus: Dead WBC and the bacteria they killed

White blood cells 

Platelets

• Not cells 
• Broken parts of cells
• Function: clotting 

Clotting inside blood vessels is called thrombosis

– Anaemia: the blood contains too little haemoglobin. This can make you feel weak and tired all the time.

• White blood cells:

– Cells with nuclei.

– White blood cells do not have a fixed shape; they can pass through the capillaries’ walls.

– Function: protection against pathogens, for instance by encapsulating bacteria.

• Platelets:

– Fragments of cells that have broken up, with no nuclei.

– Function: coagulation.
