Plan: Reading and listening

At the end of the lesson I:

- can watch a video to find out information and answer questions in English.

- can find the translation of difficult words while listening

Overgang start naar doelen: alright everybody, good morning. Put your phones in the phone bag. I want all 21 of them in there. Take out your books, a notebook and a pen. Compliment the students who already have their books/put their phones away. Make it go quick. They can do this within 30 seconds because it's all a reminder of what I already said.

Today we have 2 presentations and after that we will start on Theme 7. Student, please read out the goals for me.

Interruptions:

Behalve bij te grote overtredingen. Dan is het of meteen verplaatsen/strafwerk of meteen vertrekken.

4. vertrekken - dit wel echt doen. Als ik dit consequent doe, gebeurt het mogelijk een aantal keer, maar daarna hopelijk niet meer.

The Slurpee - Video

On your hand-out, write down what you already know about Slurpee's. If you don't know anything, write 'nothing' or make a guess.

2 minute video. 6 open questions. You answer in English.

After the video is done, write down your answer to the 'after watching question'.

Hand out the hand-out and ask students to fill in the preknowledge question. They can softly discuss this with their neighbour. Then ask 3 students at random to tell me what they wrote down. If all of them say 'nothing' ask who wrote something other than nothing and what that is.

Ask students to read through the questions (they are in chronological order) and ask if there's anything not clear about them. Then pull up the video to watch. They have to answer the 6 open questions while they watch and then the last question after the video is done. This way of doing listening/watching I got from the theory books.

Discuss the answers. Start with the 6 open questions and then ask them about the last one. This part can be more of an open conversation.

Reading

Open your sb. on p. 105 to the text 'The science of summer treats'. Slurpee's are one of them.

What could the text be about?

We'll read it together, so read along.

Explain we watched the video because Slurpee's are in the text that we're reading.

Ask students what the text could be about (1 min) and then read the text together. I will do the intro, 5 other students do the rest of the text. I will pick at random this time. (4 min)

Zelfstandig aan het werk

What: Maak opdracht 5, 6 en 7 in je wb. p. 61/62

How: Je mag met de persoon naast je aan het werk. 

Help: Tekst p. 105, elkaar, de docent

Time: 13 min

Done: Maak opdracht 1 op p. 59 m.b.v. de 'fact file' op sb. p. 104 als voorbereiding op de luisteropdracht.

Outcome: dit is na 13 min af. Hierna gaan we luisteren doen.

Zelf bezig:

Verwachtingen: Dan ga je nu de opdrachten van B maken. Ik wil iedereen bezig zien met deze opdrachten. Je mag rustig samenwerken met de persoon naast je. Als je klaar bent met de opdrachten dan ga je de woorden van B leren.

Zet leerlingen aan het werk.

Als leerlingen niet bezig zijn waar ze mee bezig moeten zijn: 

1. Herhaal de verwachtingen

2. Waarschuw ze

3. Verplaats ze naar een plek waar ze alleen zitten.

4. Geef ze strafwerk op. Woensdag leveren ze in: Woorden van B En-Ne en Ne-En 2 keer. Het gewone hw is ook af. Deze gaan ze buiten het lokaal maken. Alleen boeken/papier en pen mee, de tas en telefoon blijven in het lokaal.

I will ask a student to read out the goals and ask if they have done those things 

Students may not put their books away until I am done discussing the goals with them. If they do, they need to grab them again. No exceptions. (Unless I have told them they could in the step before this)
