Environment  = omgeving

microenvironment: the environment the phsyically surrounds the animal: the cage, the box, pen, stall box.

macroenvironment: the environment the microenvironment is in: the classroom, the the barn, outdoor habitat.

Temperature & humidity

Animals should be housed within temperature and humidity ranges appropriate for the species to which they can adapt with minimal stress  and physiological alteration.

• Humidity = luchtvochtigheid
• Appropriate = gepast
• Physiological alteration = fysiologische veranderingen 

Temperature & Humidity

The purpose of ventilation is to provide appropriate air quality and a stable environment. Ventilation provides an adequate oxygen supply, removes particulate contaminates, adjusts the moisture content and temperature of room air. 

Useful words:

• appropriate = gepaste

Housing = huisvesting

All animals should be housed under conditions that provide meet physical, phyiological, and behavioral needs.

What are some requirements for housing an animal?

Food & Diets

Animals should be fed palatable, uncontaminated diets that meet their nutrtional and behavioral needs. 

• uncontaminated: niet besmettelijk
• nutritional: voedingswaarde

Types of diets

• Natural ingredient diets: the typical food given to laboratory animals.

•  Certified diets: food given to animals within a specific purpose.

• Purified diets: pure food. potential for contamination is lower.

• Chemically defined diets: food that contains certain chemicals

Enrichment = verreiking

Enrichment promotes mental and physical stimulation and replicates scenarios like those of their wild counterparts.
