More information about 'which'
Places: We use 'where' for location. However, we can also use 'which' to provide more information about a place.
  • Example: Salem is the city where I was grew up. (emphasis on the place)
  • Example: Salem, which is the capital of Oregon, is a beautiful city. (more information about a city)

Which vs that: If there are commas, generally use 'which'. No commas, use 'that'.
  • Example: The doctor that I usually go to is in Arnhem. (that could be left out)
  • Example: The doctor, which I prefer to visit, is in Arnhem. (commas!)

Pssssst... Sometimes it's okay to use either 'that' or 'which'.

Relative pronouns and commas
Use commas to set off nonrestrictive subordinate clauses (can leave it out of the sentence and it still makes sense), and do not use commas to set off restrictive clauses (can't leave it out of the sentence).
  • Example with comma: We had fish and chips, which I always enjoy. (sentence would still make sense without 'which I always enjoy)
  • Example no comma: The woman that I married is named Angela. (without 'that I married' the sentence wouldn't make sense)
