The nervous system

The nervous system is made up of:

• the central nervous system 

--> Brain + spinal cord

• the nerves.  

the nerves connect the central nervous system to all parts of the body.

How does the nervous system work?

Sensory cell receive stimulus from outside (ex. chocolate)

1. Cell body - located in or near the CNS

2. Axon - conducts (vervoert) impulses to and from cell body

How impulses start

Stimulus needs to be strong enough -> threshold value = the lowest intensity of stimulus that causes an impulse.

A stimulus must first reach the threshold value. If the stimulus then gets even stronger, the impulse frequency increases: more impulses are sent every second. The strength of the signal  is always the same in an impulse

This is where the receptor cells of the senses in our skin are located. (heat, touch, cold)

The receptor cells for the sense of pressure are found deeper in the skin.

The wall of an eye consists of three layers:

Sclera,

Choroid (vaatvlies): contains blood vessels for nutrition,

Retina (netvlies): Contains sensory cells.

Optic nerve: transmits the impulses to the brain.

Fovea (gele vlek): Where you see most sharply

Blind spot (blinde vlek): there are no sensory cells on the blind spot
