Past perfect
- Completed in the past, before something else happened
= Had + past participle

- When he had finished his lunch, he went home.


Past perfect continuous

- Completed in the past, took some time. Focus on duration.
= Had + been + present participle
(+ing)

- I had been studying English for six years (wel zes jaar lang, nu niet meer).
