What are social studies?

Is all about society

living together

• social studies is about society
• you live together in large and small groups, such as with your classmates or in the neighbourhood
• the small group of people in your enviroment that you see regulary is called your SOCIAL ENVIRONMENT

living together

• we also live together in a larger group
• in the Netherlands we live together with millions of people
• this larger group is called society

you need others

• people depend on eachother: school, shops, your social environment
• because we live with millions and because we depend on others, there must be agreements

living together is not possible without rules

• codes of conduct

• rules that you automatically apply and take for granted
• they are rarely written down
•  often have to do with decency: decency rules
• e.g. shaking someones hand or getting up in a full bus

legal rules

• rules laid down in law
• these rules are written down
• e.g. don't cycle thtough a red light
