Structure 

  1. Is the title of the news article​

  2. Should be short

  3. Does not include a lot of detail​

  4. Should catch the readers’ attention​

  5. Tries to summarize the main idea or subject of the article​

  6. Is often printed in larger letters than the rest of the article, and the major words are capitalized

Headline (heading):
Byline:
  1. Placed at the beginning of the article in bold print.
  2. Notes name journalist and location.

  1. Is found at the beginning of the article. 
  2. The lead ​ should answer the questions “who”, “what”, “when”, “why”, “where”, and “how”. ​

Types of articles
There are a lot of different types of articles, but you need to know these:
  • News story or news report
  • Feature article (to inform and entertain the readers. The "story behind the news story".
  • Letter to the editor
  • Column

  • purpose = to inform
  • Short paragraphs
  • Images support topic of article

  • Reaction to an article (mention it!)
  • Be concise and have focus
  • Give your opinion/reaction
  • Short, in paragraphs
  • End with name

For your portfolio you need to:
  • Write 2 different types of texts
  • Display your understanding of these different text types in your writing and layout,
  • Be creative!
