Past Simple vs Present Perfect

Past simple

- Happened in the past and is finished now.

- Signaalwoorden: yesterday, 

last week, last year, 

three days ago, a long time ago, 

in 1989, etc.

Past simple

Regular verbs: verb + ed 

- to talk: I talked to Jim this morning.

- to watch: We watched the match yesterday.

- to walk: Last week, they walked towards the forest.

Past simple - exceptions

- Irregular verbs: veranderen helemaal van vorm ->  2e kolom p. 175

- Verbs ending with an -e, you only add a -d:

to bake: We baked a delicious cake yesterday. 

- Verbs ending with an -y, and a consonant (medeklinker), end in -ied:

to marry: She married him when she was 18 years old.

- Short verbs, one vowel and one syllable, you add the last consonant and +ed:

to swap: They swapped their Ipods to listen to each others music.

Present Perfect

- Voltooid tegenwoordige tijd

- It started in the past and is still happening now.

- It started in the past and the effect or result is still visible now. (vb. diploma)

Present Perfect

have / has + voltooid deelwoord (-ed or 3rd column)

Signaalwoorden: for, since, already, ever en never

- Marc has lived in Laren since 2002.

- We have worked on our business idea for 3 years.

- You haven't been to that shop. --> ontkennend (You have not been to that shop.)

- I have never eaten that in my life!

- I lived in Amsterdam for 2 years.

(not living there anymore)

- I have lived in Amsterdam for 

2 years.

(still living there now)

Summary:

Past simple when the action is already finished:

- My mother gave my brother a hug yesterday --> past simple

Present perfect when the action started in the past and the action is still happening now or when the result is still visible.

- I have studied English. --> present perfect --> result = my diploma and I still have that diploma now. 

Past simple vs Present perfect

If you are unsure, ask the following questions:

1. Is it still happening now?

Yes? = present perfect.        No? = go to question 2.

2. Is it about experiences until now?

Yes? = present perfect.        No? = go to question 3.

3. Is the result of the action still visible now?

Yes? = present perfect.       No? = past simple
