Textual analysis
Part of the aim this year (and for your IB exams in a few years) is that you are able to recognise, analyse and write different text types
  • Showing your understanding of the effect of language, layout and visuals in different types of texts
  • “If I want to persuade a person to buy my product, I need to convince them of the necessity. If I want to convince them, I have to use an effective combination of language and visuals. I have to adopt convincing language.”

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

Textual analysis is ...
Recognising and describing different text features and their effects on a reader.

Include the Big 5 in your textual analysis and you know your analysis is complete.

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

The Big 5
Every type of text is written for a particular audience, for a particular purpose
Make-up advertisement in magazine:
(professional) women interested in appearance; to make these women buy that particular brand of make-up
Background news article on the status of bitcoins
Adults interested in world politics and economics; to provide detailed information on the topic
The purpose and the audience determine the topic, the tone and mood of the text, the language and style and the structure of the text

Slide 10 - Tekstslide

Let's practise...
The next slide contains a printed advertisement published in the USA in 2013

For the ad, try to determine:
The ‘authors’
The intended audience
The purpose

Interesting points to mention with regard to language use, wording, visual representation, colour use. In other words: what would you focus your analysis on?

Tone, mood & style

Stylistic features, tone and mood are used in all sorts of texts to reach an audience and to achieve different purposes

Take a look at the speech by Emma Watson and try and find stylistic features
Underline and label!
Then think about the purpose – what specific effects do they have?
