Past tenses
Three past tenses you need to know:
  • Past simple;
  • Past continuous;
  • Present perfect.

Past tenses
Past simple: when do you use it?
  • When something happened in the past and time is important.
  • Recognized by words like "yesterday", "last year", "in 2013"
  • Regular verbs + -ed
  • Irregular verbs have their own forms

Past tenses
Past continuous: when do you use it? 
  • Something that was happening at a certain point in time in the past;
  • Something you were doing at a certain point in time in the past.
  • NL: iets wat aan de gang was in het verleden;
  • Example: I was writing a poem.

Past continuous:
  • Some times recognized by words like "when", "while" or "for"
  • Example: He was calling his friends, when his mom walked in.
  • was/were + verb + -ing

Past tenses
When do you use the Present perfect?
  • Time is not important;
  • Still going on;
  • You see the result now;
  • Just or not yet happened (Lately, just, yet, recently);
  • Have/has + verb + -ed (regular verbs);
  • Irregular verbs have different forms.

When do you use it?
  • To talk about something that always happened in the past.
  • Example: I used to go to school by train, but I recently bought a car.
  • Example: He used to visit me every day, but he moved away.

When do you use "a" and when "an"?
  • "a" before consonants;
  • "an" before vowels;
  • When referring to a profession;
  • Nationalities;
  • religions.

  • She is president. -> not "a president"
  • He is king. -> not "a king"

When do you use "the"?
  • When referring to specific:
  • Meals;
  • seasons;
  • buildings.
  • Example: We went to the hospital in our town. 
  • Example: I was born in the fall of 1999.
