How do you make the past continuous? (grammar rule)

Grammar 8: p. 47 text book 

- Past continuous = verleden tijd in duurvorm

- was/were + infinitief (= hele werkwoord) + ing:

Elissa was working late. [...] As she was walking, she heard footsteps behind her. They were following her.

- In het Nederlands: 

Elissa was nog laat aan het werk. [...] Terwijl ze aan het lopen was, hoorde ze voetstappen achter haar.

- Je kunt de Past continuous en de Past simple ook samen in een (1) zin gebruiken.

- Dat doe je als in het verleden iets gebeurde (Past simple), terwijl er al iets anders aan de gang was (Past continuous).

- VOORBEELD:

They were having a family picnic when it started to rain.

Negative questions (ontkennende vragen) gebruik je bij:

- retorische vragen (wat zijn dat?)

- vragen waarop het antwoord waarschijnlijk 'ja' is

- het uitdrukken van je verrassing

HET ANTWOORD IS MEESTAL POSITIEF

Voorbeeld: Hasn't he got a new house? Yes, he has!

Ontkennende vragen maak je zo:

- Door het voorop zetten van

de ontkennende vorm van to be, have (got): 

Wasn't she here just now? Hasn't he got a lovely wife?

- Of door het voorop zetten van

de hulpwerkwoorden do/did, can: Can't you see me? Don't you hear me?
