Past perfect 
The past perfect is used to indicate the first thing that occurred.
"Tygo had eaten a breakfast burrito before he entered class."
He first ate then he entered class.

It is often used in combination with the past simple or past continuous, but can be used on its own as well.
"I had kicked the door closed"
