When to use which tense..
Present Simple
facts, habits, opinion.
Present Continuous
something is happening now, to express irritation.
Past Continuous
events in the past that were happening for a while (long)
Past Simple
things that happened and have finished (short)

To make the past continuous, you use: was/were+ verb + -ing
(to sleep) I was sleeping
(to study) They were studying
(to compete) The team was competing
Exception: when verb ends in -e it gets replaced by just -ing

Past Continuous
You can use the past continuous and the past simple together in one sentence. Past continuous for the long activity and past simplefor the short activity.
He was doing his homework when he noticed a rainbow.

Past Continuous
When both tenses are used, the past simple interrupts the past continuous while it is happening.
So the long action gets interrupted by the short action.
Can you see the difference in meaning of these two sentences?
