Close reading = 
observing facts and details about a text. 
You may focus on a particular passage, or on the text as a whole.  
Your goal can be to look for certain grammatical structures, vocabulary, or look at the writer's intention.
Usually you reread a text multiple times when close reading.

How? - Step 1
Read with a pencil in hand, and annotate the text.

"Annotating" means underlining or highlighting key words and phrases—anything that strikes you as surprising or significant, or that raises questions—as well as making notes in the margins.

Look for patterns in the things you've noticed about the text—repetitions, contradictions, similarities.

Ask questions about the patterns you've noticed—especially how and why.

Use text on paper
  • Go through the text with a pencil.
  • Underline all words, structures, passages that you find difficult or stand out.
  • Look up meanings for words you don't know.
