Aim

At the end of class, I will have expanded my vocabulary by playing a game about English proverbs

Question: What is a proverb?

Question: What is an idiom?

A proverb is:

A saying or expression that is often used to express truth or to give advice.

How does it work?

• Played in teams of 3. Only 1 device per team
• Log into LessonUp with your team number (e.g. Team 3)
• For every proverb, discuss in English what it could mean for about a minute
• Write down the meaning in English and submit your answer
• No cheating! Don't look it up on Google, that's no fun!

Meaning:

Take action when an opportunity or chance arises, for it may not happen again!

Proverb #2:
Too many cooks spoil the broth.

Meaning:

When too many people want to do the same thing at the same time, there might be trouble!

Proverb #3:
Beggars can't be choosers.

Meaning:

You should accept what you get offered for free!

Proverb #4:
Two wrongs don't make a right.

Meaning:

If someone is bad to you, it does not mean that being bad to them too will make things good again.

Proverb #5:
Don’t bite off more than you can chew.

Meaning:

Don't force yourself to do too much you can handle, otherwise you cannot focus on what you're doing.

Proverb #6:

You made your bed, now you have to lie in it.

Meaning:

You have to live with the consequences of your own actions.

Proverb #7:
It's no use to cry over spilled milk.

Meaning:

Don't waste time on worrying about things you can't change.

Proverb #8:
Ignorance is bliss.

Meaning:

Sometimes it's better to not know about something, because it might just be very uncomfortable or hurtful.

Proverb #9:
Close but no cigar.

Meaning:

When you almost have something right, but aren't completely correct. Or when you almost succeed, but don't make it in the end.

Proverb #10:
To beat around the bush.

Meaning:

To avoid saying what you actually mean, usually because it might be uncomfortable.

Proverb #11:
To hit the hay.

Meaning:

To go to bed.

Proverb #12:
To bark up the wrong tree.

Meaning:

To be looking for solutions in the wrong place, or to be mistaken.

Proverb #13:
To do a rain check.

Meaning:

To postpone a plan. (To do it later)

Proverb #14:
To throw caution to the wind.

Meaning:

To take a risk.

Proverb #15:
A stitch in time saves nine.

Meaning:

It's better to fix a problem before it gets worse in the future.
