Learning objectives
  • You will learn about the parts of your brain, how they work and how you study.
  • You will learn about the nervous system of worms.

Slide 4 - Tekstslide

To make your brain 'crack'
When playing chess, but also with normal, simple things, your brain uses a lot of energy.

Slide 5 - Tekstslide

On average, what percentage of your energy do you think is used by your brain?

The brain

Slide 7 - Tekstslide

The brain; the cerebrum
cerebral cortex = completely folded external surface of the cerebrum

sensory cortices = part of the cerebral cortex where awareness takes place or reactions arise.

Slide 8 - Tekstslide

The brain; the cerebellum
The cerebellum = part of the brain that is responsible for coordinating muscular movements

coördination = delicate tuning of muscle contraction when moving

Slide 9 - Tekstslide

The brain; the brainstem
brainstem = the connection of cerebrum and cerebellum with your spinal cord

subconscious body = processes of your body that occur automatically

E.g. heart rate, breathing, body temperature, pupillary reflex

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Your brain and learning
New connections between nerve cells

Automation = using the same nerve cells over and over again, so that something happens automatically.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Memory
Short-term memory = memory information for a short amount of time
(e.g. short shopping list)

Long-term memory = information that you remember for a long time
(e.g. your own phone number)

memory trace = pattern of connections between neurons on the cerebral cortex;

Slide 14 - Tekstslide

The nervous system of an earthworm
two nerve centres = centre of neurons where impulses from various senses come together and  are send to other nerve centres or muscles

Two imortant stimuli:
light stimuli (with head and tail)
vibrations (pressure senses in the skin)
