Slide 5 - Tekstslide

Short anwers
In English it sounds impolite to answer questions using just 'yes' or 'no'. You can still give short, polite answers by using auxiliaries.

Slide 6 - Tekstslide

Which verb is the auxiliary?
'How long does it usually take to get home from school?'
A
get
B
does
C
take

Slide 7 - Quizvraag

Which verb is the auxiliary?
'Which school subjects did you like when you were younger?'
A
did
B
like
C
were

Slide 8 - Quizvraag

'Who is sitting next to you? What is he/she wearing?'
A
sitting
B
is
C
wearing

Slide 9 - Quizvraag

Which verb is the auxiliary?
'Which other foreign languages have you studied?'
A
have
B
studied

Slide 10 - Quizvraag

The main auxiliary verbs
  • to be
  • to do
  • to have

Deze hulpwerkwoorden komen het meeste voor. Ze functioneren voornamelijk als tijdsbepaling in een zin (present, past and future).

Slide 11 - Tekstslide

Negatives
Voeg -n't toe aan het hulpwerkwoord (of alleen 'not') om een zin negatief te maken.
He is working. - He isn't working.
We have seen the play. - We haven't seen the play.

Als er geen hulpwerkwoord in de zin staat, gebruik don't/doesn't/didn't
She works in a bank. - She doesn't work in a bank.
They like skiing. - They don't like skiing.
He went on holiday. - He didn't go on holiday.

Slide 12 - Tekstslide

Make the following sentence negative.
'He is playing today.'

Slide 13 - Open vraag

Make the following sentence negative.
'He plays every Saturday.'

Slide 14 - Open vraag

Questions
Om een zin vragend te maken, verwissel je het onderwerp en het hulpwerkwoord (auxiliary) van plaats.
She is wearing jeans. - Is she wearing jeans?
You were born in Paris. - Were you born in Paris?

Als er geen hulpwerkwoord is (geen 'to be' of 'to have'), gebruik dan do/does/did aan het begin van de zin.
I know you - Do I know you?

Slide 15 - Tekstslide

Make this sentence a question.
'Peter has been to China.'

Slide 16 - Open vraag

Make this sentence a question.
'He wants ice-cream.'

Slide 17 - Open vraag

Short, polite answers
Om beleefd antwoord te geven zeg je dus niet alleen yes/no, maar voeg je ook een hulpwerkwoord (auxiliary) toe.
Did you have a good day? - Yes, I did. / No, I didn't.

Het is dan ook nog beter als je wat extra informatie erbij geeft.
Did you have a good day? - Yes, I did. I had a football match in the morning and we managed to win. / No I didn't. I forgot that I had loads of homework, so I studied all day.
